Bangkok-based petrol station operator PTG Energy is increasing investment in its PunThai coffee business in a challenge to Thai branded coffee shop market leader Café Amazon, which is owned by rival petrol station giant PTT Oil and Retail Business (PTT OR).
PTG Energy launched value-focused PunThai Coffee in 2012 and opened more than 450 net new coffee shops in 2024 to reach 1,347 sites – 57% of which are within PTG Energy petrol stations.
At an investor event on 10 March 2025, the petrol station operator said more than two thirds of its THB 7bn ($206.8m) 2025 budget will be allocated to growing non-petrol operations, with a primary focus on scaling PunThai Coffee.
PTG Energy is seeking to reach 2,000 PunThai stores by the end of 2025 and has a longer-term goal of reach 5,000 coffee shops by the end of 2027. The petrol station group is also considering publicly listing PunThai Coffee on the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) in 2027 to accelerate the coffee chain’s growth.
Punthai Coffee revenue grew 82.6% year-on-year in the 12 months ended 31 December 2024 to reach THB 2.2bn ($66.9m), with gross profit increasing 80% year-on-year to THB 1.2bn ($35.6m). PTG Energy’s total revenue grew 14% year-on-year to reach THB 225.8bn ($6.6bn) in 2024.
PTG Energy’s investment in PunThai Coffee comes hot on the heels of PTT OR’s ambitious plans to extend its market lead in the Thai branded coffee shop market. In March 2025, Bangkok-based PTT OR announced a THB 7.4bn ($220m) budget to scale its Café Amazon network in Thailand, where it currently operates 4,430 Café Amazon – 53% of which are in PTT OR-owned petrol stations.
PTG Energy currently operates 2,229 petrol stations across Thailand. The group’s non-petrol business also includes over 360 Max Mart convenience stores, 24 Coffee World outlets and 117 Autobacs vehicle repair shops.
