Thailand’s Café Amazon looks set to achieve its goal of opening 300 new stores in 2024 after a third successive quarter of strong outlet growth.
The PTT Oil and Retail Business (PTT OR)-owned coffee chain opened 69 net new stores in the three months ended 30 September 2024 to reach 4,749 outlets across 12 markets. Café Amazon has opened 289 net new stores in the first nine months of 2024, mostly in Thailand.
Bangkok-based Café Amazon currently operates 4,339 outlets in Thailand – 54% of which are in PTT OR-owned petrol stations. The operator is the largest branded coffee chain in the East Asian country by outlets, ahead of 1,000+ store chain Inthanin and PunThai Coffee – which are also owned by Thai petrol station operators.
Cafe Amazon also operates 310 international stores in 11 markets across East Asia and the Middle East, including sites in China, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam.
In August 2024, PTT OR announced plans to launch Café Amazon in Bangladesh in the fourth quarter after signing a master franchise agreement with Bashundhara Group to open 100 stores in the South Asian country.
According to PTT OR sales data, Café Amazon sold 98 million cups of coffee in the third quarter and 299 million during 2024 so far – 8% higher than the first nine months of 2023 – tracking above its target one million per day.
Alongside Café Amazon, PTT OR’s food and beverage portfolio also includes more than 120 Pacamera Coffee Roasters and Pearly Tea stores. The petrol station operator ended a licensing deal with US fast-food chain Texas Chicken in September 2024, shuttering over 90 sites.
Collectively, PTT OR’s F&B segment achieved 1% year-on-year sales growth in the third quarter to reach THB 4bn ($116.7m). Over 90% of its THB 176bn ($5bn) third quarter revenues were generated by its petrol station business.
