Mexico’s Caffenio has launched in the US with a drive-thru outlet in Mesa, Arizona.
The drive-thru coffee chain has been preparing for its US launch for 18 months. In October 2023, Arizona-based architecture firm Stewart + Reindersma announced it had completed the first ‘prototype store’ for Caffenio ahead of a planned 2024 debut – a move confirmed by Caffenio on social media in February 2024.
The coffee chain’s long-awaited debut comes shortly after it unveiled its US headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, in January 2025.
Founded in Sonora in 2007, Caffenio currently operates 200 stores across more than 50 Mexican cities. The majority of its outlets feature double drive-thru lanes and a priority lane for orders made through the Caffenio app.
Caffenio will be seeking to tap into the booming US drive-thru coffee shop market, which is led by segment specialists Dutch Bros and Scooter’s Coffee, with 1,000 and 850 stores respectively.
Sonora-based Caffenio is currently the only Mexican branded coffee shop chain operating in the US market, World Coffee Portal research shows. The chain sources coffee from the Pluma Hidalgo municipality in Oaxaca, southwest Mexico, for its beverages menu, which features more than 90 hot and iced coffee options.
