Japanese bakery-café chain Bread, Espresso & has made its US debut with a store in Redondo Beach, California.
The 2,000sq ft outlet has seating for 32, with much of its floor space dedicated to a state-of-the-art kitchen. In a press release, Bread, Espresso & said the store will serve its signature cube-shaped mou bread and coffee supplied by Los Angeles small-batch coffee roaster Caffe Luxxe.
“Our menu brings together classic favourites and new creations that reflect both our Japanese roots and the local flavours of California. We’ve enjoyed getting to know our neighbours, exploring the farmers market and are eager to offer the community a taste of our unique Japanese bakery and café experience,” said Sakurai Tadatsugu, Executive Chef, Bread, Espresso &.
Bread, Espresso & opened its first store in Tokyo’s fashionable Omotesando shopping district in 2009 and currently operates 37 outlets across Japan. It is the third Japanese branded coffee chain to launch in the US following specialty coffee group % Arabica and fellow bakery-café chain Hamadaya Bread Bar & Coffee, which operate five and four US stores respectively.
Bread, Espresso & also joins a growing market for East Asian bakery-café chains in the US. South Korea’s Paris Baguette and TOUS les JOURS, as well as Taiwan’s 85°C Bakery Cafe, all achieved outlet growth last year to reach 200, 130 and 79 stores respectively.
The Redondo Beach outlet will be managed by H.I.S. Americas Inc, a subsidiary of Bread, Espresso &’s parent company HIS Group – one of Japan’s largest travel agencies. Bread, Espresso & is H.I.S. Americas Inc’s second food business in the US after Hollywood-based restaurant UKA.
