Italy’s Zicaffè seeks to block fashion house Zara’s from launching Zacaffe coffee shops

Sicilian coffee roaster Zicaffè has filed a request with the EU’s Intellectual Property Office (EUIOP) to block Spanish fashion retailer Zara from using the name ‘Zacaffe’ for its planned new coffee shops. In its filing, Zicaffè said the close similarity of the names could lead to an unfair advantage for Zara and parent company Inditex, as well as the likelihood of confusion and harm to the distinctiveness of its own brand. Inditex filed a request to patent the Zacaffe brand on 7 October 2024 and opened its Zacaffè coffee shop in Madrid, Spain, the following month. The retail giant said on its website that the coffee shops will have independent entrances and will be adapted to their locations. It is not the first time Zara has been involved in a coffee-related branding lawsuit. The clothing retailer has been in a legal dispute with Italian coffee roaster Bazzara since 2015 over the four letters shared by the two brands, which Zara claims could cause confusion, jeopardise its reputation and mislead customers.
