Lavazza has unveiled a new patented single-serve coffee system designed to eliminate waste generated by aluminium and plastic capsules.
Marking a major new investment in the single-serve segment, the premium Italian coffee roaster revealed the new Tablì system during April’s Milan Design Week ahead of a planned launch in Italy in September 2025. The system uses ‘100% coffee tabs’, made from pressed ground coffee, a nd will primarily be sold for at-home coffee consumption.
In a press release, Turin-based Lavazza said it has been developing the single-serve product since acquiring Italian start-up Caffemotive in January 2020 and has filed more than 15 patents to protect its research and development.

“In the year of our 130th anniversary we are ready to launch the innovative Tablì system, which allows us to introduce a new product category – the ‘tab’ made of 100% coffee – in a strategic segment such as single-serve,” said Antonio Baravalle, Group CEO, Lavazza.
Lavazza said the single-serve segment represents a ‘strategic component’ of the global coffee market and cited 4% volume growth and 3% value growth for the segment last year.
With its Tablì launch, Lavazza will be seeking to eradicate the perennial waste problem associated with the self-serve coffee industry. Research conducted by compostable capsule brand, Halo, in 2021 estimated that 29,000 single-use coffee capsules end up in landfill every minute, creating over 120,000 tonnes of waste each year.
Lavazza, which also produces packaged whole bean, ground and capsule coffee for at-home customers, achieved 9% year-on-year revenue growth last year to reach a record €3.35bn ($3.67bn).
