Circle K owner Alimentation Couche-Tard has appointed Alex Miller as its new President and CEO, effective 6 September 2024.

Miller joined the Canadian petrol station and convenience retailer as Director of Fuels, Real Estate and Facilities in 2012 and held several senior roles before being appointed Chief Operating Officer in January 2023. He will become just the third CEO of Alimentation Couche-Tard in its nearly 45-year history, succeeding Brian Hannasch who is retiring.

Hannasch will retain a Special Advisor role at the business to support Miller and Founder Alain Bouchard, who chairs Alimentation Couche-Tard's Board of Directors.

“The Board and I have been planning for an orderly and seamless succession for several years, and we have carefully assessed the process and possible candidates. It is important to us that our next CEO comes from within the business and fully embraces our values, culture, and growth-oriented mindset. For those reasons, we have the utmost confidence that Alex is the best person to be our next President and CEO,” Bouchard said.

Alimentation Couche-Tard operates more than 16,700 convenience, quick service and petrol station outlets in North America, Europe and Asia through its Circle K, Couche-Tard and Ingo quick-service businesses.

Circle K is one of the largest convenience brands with a coffee offer in North America, with more than 7,100 stores across the US and a further 2,100 in Canada, serving over 120 million cups of coffee annually via its bean-to-cup self-serve coffee machines.

However, the convenience store chain scrapped its $9.99 Sip & Save beverage subscription in the US in April 2024 to instead prioritise app promotions and its Inner Circle rewards programme.
