Berjaya Food International (BFI), the global franchise subsidiary of Malaysian food and beverage group Berjaya Food, has secured licensing rights to operate Starbucks stores in Denmark, Finland and Iceland.
In Denmark, Berjaya Food has become the new licensed retail operator for Danish retail firm Salling Group, which already operates 18 Starbucks stores in the Nordic market.
“We are pleased to welcome Berjaya Food as our new licensed retail operator partner and look forward to a strong collaboration that will strengthen our position in the Danish market even further,” said Salling Group Salling & Franchise CEO Marianne Bedsted.
Kuala Lumpur-based Berjaya Food will also add to Starbucks’ four-store presence in Finland and launch the US coffee chain in Iceland, although has yet provided a timeframe for the market debut.
“We’re pleased to expand our presence in the Nordic markets alongside our trusted and long-term business partner, Berjaya Food, and contribute to the vibrant local coffee community in the region,” added Duncan Moir, President, Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Berjaya Food partnered with US coffee giant Starbucks in December 1998 with a store in Kuala Lumpur and now operates more than 400 licensed outlets across Malaysia.
The food and beverage group also operates 70 Kenny Rogers Roasters restaurants in Malaysia, as well as licensed Paris Baguette sites in Malaysia and the Philippines. In June 2024, the franchise group signed an agreement to launch Paris Baguette in Brunei, with the first store of the partnership set to open in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Starbucks’ Nordics presence also includes 18 stores in Norway and three in Sweden, most of which are operated by travel concession operator SSP Group.
