UK specialty coffee roaster Grind has attained B Corp certification following a two-year process evaluation process.

The boutique coffee shop, bar and casual dining group, which operates 11 stores across London alongside its wholesale, e-commerce and online subscription channels, scored 82.5 in its B Impact Assessment, compared to a global average of 50.9.

Founded in 2011, Grind was the first coffee roaster in the UK to introduce certified home-compostable coffee pods in 2018. The business also sources coffee from small-scale farms that deploy regenerative agriculture practices, has introduced recyclable coffee packaging and organises ocean cleanup projects in partnership with Ocean Co.

“We originally applied for the B Corp certification two years ago, but our rapid growth meant evaluating every area took time. Finally achieving certification is worthy of celebration. It’s another step in our journey towards collective action and continuous improvement, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to minimising our impact on the planet. I am immensely proud of how committed the team at Grind is to sustainability,” said David Abrahamovitch, CEO, Grind.

B Corp certified companies meet high standards of social and environmental performance and are evaluated by B Lab across five impact areas – governance, workers, community, environment and customers. Candidates must score a minimum of 80 points across impact areas to become B Corp-certified and must recomplete the assessment every three years.

Other UK-based specialty coffee roasters to have attained B Corp accreditation within the last two years include Pact Coffee, Ozone Coffee Roasters and Climpson & Sons. Origin Coffee and Dark Woods Coffee both recertified as B Corps earlier this year with improved scores.
