UK specialty coffee and hospitality group Grind will open its first UK location outside of London in Manchester this summer.

Founded in 2011, Grind currently operates 11 outlets and three coffee carts across London, alongside e-commerce and wholesale channels.

The group will open at the St Michael’s mixed-use redevelopment site in Manchester City Centre – a £400m ($517m) project led by former footballer turned property entrepreneur Gary Neville. Grind will join Italian restaurant chain Circolo Popolare, high-end French-Peruvian diner Chotto Matte and premium pub Abercrombie at the site.

“We’ve always said that if we were to do a big site outside of London, the first place we would go would be Manchester. My wife is Mancunian and her whole family live in Manchester, so I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years and I’ve always thought that a Grind would work well. We’ve looked at various locations over the years, but we think we’ve finally found the perfect home for Grind in St Michaels, in the heart of Manchester," said David Abrahamovitch, Founder and CEO, Grind.

Grind is the latest London-based hospitality brand to launch in Manchester. Boutique bakery-café group Gail’s opened its first store in the North of the UK in nearby Wilmslow, Cheshire, in February 2023 before opening an outlet in Manchester City Centre four months later.

New Zealand-based specialty coffee roaster Allpress Espresso, which has had a presence in London since 2010, opened a 2,500sq ft café and training hub in Manchester’s NOMA business and entertainment district in September 2023, before UK hospitality group Caravan opened its first site outside of London in the city in August 2024.

Grind opened its first outlet outside of London in Los Angeles, US, in September 2022 as part of a partnership with private members group Soho House. Grind, which supplies coffee for Soho House’s global portfolio of clubs, hotels and restaurants, closed the store in the first quarter of 2024.
