US donut and coffee chain Krispy Kreme has promoted Josh Charlesworth to President and CEO, effective 1 January 2024. Charlesworth most recently served as Krispy Kreme’s Global President and Chief Operating Officer after joining the company in 2017 and has ‘decades of experience overseeing consumer brands’.

“Together, we will continue to make fantastic, fresh doughnuts conveniently available
to more and more consumers around the world. I want to thank Mike for the strong foundation he has built as we pursue our goal to become the world’s most loved sweet treat brand,” Charlesworth said in a press release.

Outgoing CEO Michael Tattersfield, who held the role since 2017, was credited with leading the ‘significant expansion and transformation’ of Krispy Kreme and growing revenues from $550m in 2016 to more than an expected $1.6bn in 2023.

Tattersfield joins fellow JAB Holding-backed business Panera Brands as Lead Independent Director as the US bakery-café group prepares for a long-awaited public offering. He will remain on the Krispy Kreme board and transition to Senior Advisor and Krispy Kreme Ambassador, effective 1 January 2024.

“Transforming the Krispy Kreme brand and culture has been a highlight of my career… Josh’s shared passion for the brand, our Krispy Kremers, and freakin’ awesome doughnuts gives me the utmost confidence in our continued success and I look forward to watching all he’ll accomplish,” Tattersfield said.

Charlesworth’s appointment comes as Krispy Kreme rolls out a ‘comprehensive relaunch’ of its US beverage menu, including the upgrade of in-store equipment and the permanent expansion of its coffee offer to include more than 20 espresso-based, iced and oat milk coffee beverages.

Krispy Kreme achieved 10.5% group sales growth in 2022 to reach $1.53bn.
