Juan Valdez is set to expand its international store footprint with its first store in the UAE and a market re-entry in Mexico.

The Bogotá-based coffee chain currently operates 557 stores globally, comprising 360 in Colombia and 197 across 17 international markets.

Having opened its first store in Egypt in October 2023, Juan Valdez will open an outlet in Dubai in December 2023 before re-establishing its store presence in Mexico early next year. The coffee chain closed its eight stores in the North American country in 2018 after terminating an ‘unprofitable’ franchise partnership.

Juan Valdez’s international business achieved 16% year-on-year sales growth in the third quarter, which it attributed to strong in-store sales and horeca partnerships. In particular, the coffee chain said it had successfully strengthened its presence in Turkey and Qatar during the period.

Total sales grew 29% year-on-year in the first nine months of 2023 to reach Col$511bn ($129m), with Juan Valdez’s retail and horeca channels achieving 32% and 33% growth respectively.

Juan Valdez achieved 52% sales growth in 2022 to reach Col$554bn ($116m), alongside Col$2.9bn ($608,000) gross profit.
