Canadian coffee roaster and café chain Artigiano has acquired organic and fair-trade coffee roaster Salt Spring Coffee for an undisclosed sum.
In a press release, Artigiano said the acquisition of Salt Spring’s roastery, wholesale and retail business strongly supports its growth ambitions and sees it become the second-largest roaster of organic coffee in Canada, as well as the country’s only roaster of Regenerative Organic Certified coffee.
Founded in 1999 as Caffè Artigiano, Vancouver-based Artigiano currently operates 25 cafés across its home city alongside a single site in Calgary, Alberta. The business has a further five stores scheduled to open in the first half of 2025.
“Integrating Salt Spring Coffee into the Artigiano family is a significant milestone. Salt Spring’s unwavering dedication to sustainability and exceptional coffee quality aligns seamlessly with our values. This partnership broadens our product offerings while strengthening our commitment to environmental stewardship, including a continued focus on organic and non-GMO ingredients in everything we serve,” said Dean Shillington, President, Artigiano.
Founded in 1996 by Mickey McLeod and Robbyn Scott, Salt Spring was one of the first companies in Canada to be Fair Trade Certified in 1997 and launched the country’s first Regenerative Organic Certified coffee in 2024.
Operating from a roastery in Richmond, British Columbia, Salt Spring supplies cafés, hospitality venues and retailers, including London Drugs and Sprouts Farmers Market, via its wholesale channel. It also operates a flagship café and kitchen on Salt Spring Island.
Salt Spring President McLeod will continue to lead the coffee roaster within the larger Artigiano umbrella.
