Indonesia’s Kopi Kenangan has opened its first outlet in India at the Pacific Mall, New Delhi.

In a press release, the fast-growing coffee chain said it plans to open at least 10 stores by the end of 2025 before accelerating to 50 sites over the next few years. Approximately 70% of its stores will be traditional café format, with the remaining 30% small-format take-away sites.

Kopi Kenangan, which trades as Kenangan Coffee internationally, will invest up to Rs 40 Cr ($4.6m) into retail expansion and developing a local coffee sourcing programme.

Jakarta-based Kopi Kenangan said the move will bring a signature Indonesian coffee experience to one of the world’s most dynamic and rapidly growing coffee shop markets.

“India’s vast young population and growing appreciation for diverse coffee experiences make it an ideal market for Kenangan Coffee. We are committed to delivering high-quality coffee that resonates with local preferences, creating memorable moments for every customer,” said Edward Tirtanata, CEO, Kopi Kenangan.

Kopi Kenangan also said it is well positioned to tap into rising demand for health and wellness among Indian consumers, primarily with its use of Gula Aren, a natural sweetener derived from the sap of Indonesia’s native Arenga pinnata palm trees.

Alongside offering a range of coffees sourced from both India and Indonesia, Kopi Kenangan’s plan to source from India will also strengthen its sustainability goals, lower transport expenses and increase supply chain efficiencies. Several domestic specialty coffee chains, including Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters, Third Wave Coffee and Subko Coffee Roasters, use locally sourced coffee as a key pillar in their respective marketing.

Seeking to compete on price with value-focused domestic chains including abCoffee and Nothing Before Coffee, Kopi Kenangan’s prices will start from Rs 99 ($1.15) for espressos and Rs 129 ($1.50) for americanos. However, it will also offer a more premium beverage range priced up to Rs 329 ($3.80).

“Our mission is to blend Indonesian craftsmanship with local flavors, offering a unique coffee experience that contributes to India's vibrant coffee culture. We look forward to building a strong community of coffee enthusiasts across the country,” added Sanjay Mohta, General Manager India, Kopi Kenangan.

Founded in 2017, Kopi Kenangan is one of Indonesia’s largest coffee chains, with over 900 outlets. In January 2022, the coffee chain became the first food and beverage company from Southeast Asia’s to attain coveted unicorn status after receiving a valuation above $1bn.
