Investment in the Cape Town-based coffee roaster and services provider comes as Melitta Group seeks new sales opportunities on the African continent as part of a wider strategy to further internationalise its business

Germany’s Melitta Group has acquired a majority in stake South African coffee roaster, beverages, equipment and training provider, Caturra.
In a press release, Melitta said the acquisition, made for an undisclosed sum, would enable it to tap into new sales opportunities on the African continent. The new partnership will be managed by the Melitta Europe – Coffee Division, based in Bremen, Germany.
“Growing in new markets and internationalising our business are important for Melitta Coffee in Bremen if we are to achieve the growth and earnings targets we have set ourselves,” said Matthias Rensch, Managing Director Melitta Europe, Coffee Division.
Founded in Cape Town in 1994, Caturra offers beverages, equipment and training services across South African the out-of-home retail and Horeca segments, employing 25 staff. Its roasted coffee products include the Catura espresso and filter blends, African Renaissance, Jogajoga Café and single origin B.L.K. ranges.
It also distributes Sanremo, de Jong Duke, Wega and GJ Gerhardt bean-to-cup and espresso machines and the Twinings, Khoisan Tea and Dilmah tea brands.
“We are convinced that we can make excellent use of the Melitta Group’s extensive expertise for the growth and expansion of Caturra – and that we can also open up numerous new sales opportunities on the African continent for the Melitta Group’s business units, Rensch added.
Founded in 1908 and headquartered in Minden, Germany, Melitta Group recorded annual sales exceeding €2.2bn in 2022. The company also maintains offices in Europe, the Americas and Asia, employing more than 5,800 staff worldwide.
The group’s last major acquisition was taking a
70% stake in Italy’s Corsino Corsini in November 2021.
In addition to its B2B Melitta Professional and equipment ranges, Melitta Group also manages Brazilian coffee brand Bom Jesus coffee brand and prominent household product lines Bacofoil and Albal.
