Singapore-based Bacha Coffee has signed a franchise agreement with Tokyo-based railway conglomerate The Tokyu Group to launch in Japan in 2025.
Revived by Singaporean lifestyle group V3 Gourmet in 2019, the luxury heritage brand is seeking to open a site in Tokyo’s premium shopping district, Ginza, in the first half of 2025 before expanding to key cities such as Osaka and Kyoto.
Noting that tourist spend through the first nine months of 2024 exceed the full-year total of 2023, V3 Gourmet CEO Taha Bouqdib sais he sees the potential to open as many as 40 Bacha Coffee stores in the East Asian country by 2030.
“With this market entry we will bring the standard of coffee in Japan to another level,” he told Nikkei Asia.
Founded in Marrakesh in 1910, the original Bacha Coffee café was located in Dar el Bacha palace and was renowned for its prominent clientele, including US President Franklin Roosevelt and UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The site ceased operations after the Second World War and fell into disrepair before being revived by V3 Gourmet.
V3 Gourmet now operates 27 Bacha Coffee stores across 11 markets in East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. In September 2024, the luxury coffee brand announced plans to open a €20m ($22m) flagship outlet at Paris’ iconic Champs-Élysées in the fourth quarter of 2024 and is also seeking Macau and Saudi Arabia launches in 2025.
Founded as the Meguro-Kamata Electric Railway Company in 1922, The Tokyu Group has diversified its operations in recent years to focus on real estate, department stores, hotels and resorts.
