UK specialty coffee roaster Dark Woods Coffee has recertified as a B Corp with a score of 147.4 – 47.8 points higher than its previous accreditation in June 2020.

West Yorkshire-based Dark Woods Coffee said the higher score highlights its progress developing relationships with smallholder coffee producers, reducing plastic packaging and lowering its carbon footprint.

Dark Woods Coffee offers its packaged coffee range in fully reusable and recyclable aluminium tins, while its coffee pods are fully home-recyclable. The majority of the business’ electricity is generated from solar panels at its roastery, and its company vehicles are either fully electric or hybrid.

Founded in 2013, the majority of Marsden-based Dark Woods Coffee customers are local, independent coffee shops, pubs and restaurants. The specialty coffee roaster also supplies premium department store Fortnum & Mason.

“We are delighted to have successfully recertified as a B Corp and to see this increase in our score. It reflects the commitment and hard work of our team, to live out our purpose to balance people, planet and profit,” said Ian Agnew, Director, Dark Woods Coffee.

The B Corp certification process evaluates businesses across five impact areas – governance, workers, community, environment and customers – to build a score out of 200. Businesses need to score a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above to gain certification and are then required to recertify every three years.

There are currently 8,075 B Corp companies across the world, including 2,500 in the UK. Other certified UK coffee roasters include Origin Coffee, Climpson & Sons, Union Hand Roasted Coffee, Ozone Coffee Roasters and Pact Coffee

Dark Woods Coffee’s B Impact Assessment score of 147.4 makes it one of the highest scoring coffee companies in the world, alongside Revolver Co-operative (163.8), Sustainable Harvest (151.4), Caravela Coffee (137.1) and 918 Coffee Co (130.3).
