Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) will launch a new line of compostable plastic and aluminium-free coffee pods as part of a wider upgrade to its single-serve and coffee pod machine portfolio.

Launched following a 3.6% fall in KDP’s coffee pod sales last year, the K-Rounds have a plant-based coating developed by Delica Switzerland and are expected to be certified as home compostable later this year.

K-Rounds will only be compatible with KDP’s upcoming Keurig Alta single-serve machine, which will enter beta testing later this year before being made available for consumers. Existing K-Cup pods will also be compatible with the Keurig Alta machine.

KDP has acquired a perpetual license to technology patented by Delica Switzerland, including the plant-based coating and application processes. The agreement grants KDP exclusive rights to use and build upon these technologies for consumers across the US, Canada and Mexico.

In a bid to reverse a wider 5% decline in coffee segment sales in the US in 2023, KDP will also launch a K- Brew + Chill machine in the third quarter of 2024, which utilises new QuickChill Technology to brew hot coffee before flash-chilling.

As part of a renewed focus on value, KDP will roll out simplified, compact models of its existing Keurig coffee machine range from 2025.

“As consumers prioritise more personalised, sustainable and accessible coffee experiences, Keurig is proud to introduce the K-Cup pod system innovation plan – designed for any countertop, drink preference and budget,” said Patrick Minogue, President of US Coffee, KDP.

In addition to falling coffee pod sales last year, shipments of KDP’s coffee pod machines declined 10% year-on-year in the 12 months ending 31 December 2023.
