Spain’s GoodNews has launched in the Netherlands with a store in De Pijp – an upmarket Amsterdam neighbourhood known for its cafés, restaurants and food markets.
Founded as a coffee news stand in Barcelona in 2020, GoodNews now operates 20 kiosks and small-format stores across Spain and a further 10 in France.
The premium coffee chain first mooted an Amsterdam launch in January 2023 as part of a growth strategy to expand to Europe’s largest cities. GoodNews also highlighted Germany and the Nordics as markets of interest but has yet to announce plans.
GoodNews has raised over €15m ($16m) in several seed, Series A and crowdfunding rounds to scale its small format store footprint, subscription service and healthy Coffee Boost beverage supplement range.
The B Corp-certified business has partnered with streaming platform Amazon Music, dating app Bumble, ride hailing business Uber and beauty company Sephora on collaborations over the last six months, including external store branding, promotions and merchandise.
In February 2024, GoodNews partnered with The Hoxton Amsterdam to supply coffee for the premium hotel chain’s Sunday brunch menu.
World Coffee Portal research shows the total Dutch branded coffee shop market currently comprises 675 outlets, led by US chain Starbucks and domestic bakery brand Bagels & Beans with 101 and 84 sites respectively.
