Munich-based Coffee Fellows has acquired the 25-store German business of Swedish coffee chain Waynes from Tank & Rast.

The deal includes 24 Waynes stores at Tank & Rast motorway service stations and a single site outside of Friedrichstraße Rail Station in Berlin. All 25 outlets will be rebranded to Coffee Fellows over the next few months, which when complete will mark the exit of Waynes Coffee from the German market.

In a press release, Coffee Fellows said the deal enables it to maintain its leadership in the ‘US-styled coffee shop’ segment of Germany's branded coffee shop market. The addition of Waynes German business brings Coffee Fellows total footprint in Germany to 267 outlets and follows the acquisition of 34-store Campus Suite in September 2019.

Founded in Munich in 1999, Coffee Fellows also operates 27 stores across 11 international markets – Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Egypt, Luxembourg, Malta, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and the US

“This takeover is a significant growth step for Coffee Fellows after the challenging pandemic years. It also deepens the good partnership we have with the Tank & Rast Group along German motorways,” said Dr Stefan Tewes, Managing Director, Coffee Fellows.

Bonn-based Tank & Rast, which currently operates 90% of concessions on German motorways, acquired Waynes for an undisclosed sum in February 2018. The service station operator has more than 250 coffee outlets across its network, including licensed Coffee Fellows, Lavazza and Dallmayr units.

Founded in Stockholm in 1994, Waynes operates 144 outlets across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Cyprus, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. The brand appointed Alistair Burrows as its new CEO in November 2023.
