The UAE is positioning itself as a global coffee hub with the inauguration of a major new coffee trading facility in Dubai. The 7,500m
2 Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) Coffee Centre facility will house a coffee importing, quality analysis, roasting and warehousing operation, aiming to connect coffee consumer markets around the world to major coffee producing countries such as Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Uganda and Vietnam.
The temperature-controlled site also includes coffee quality laboratory, cupping labs, a Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) training campus and commercial office space. It is expected to handle up to 20,000 tonnes of green coffee bean annually – with an estimated annual trade value of around AED 367 million ($100 million).
The DMCC is located in the world’s largest tax-free zone and is already a gateway for major global commodities including gold, diamonds, tea and base metals. The strategic pivot toward coffee highlights the growing importance of the beverage in the UAE and across the Middle East. In January 2019,
the DMCC held a conference with some 200 representatives of the German coffee industry with a view to start a new trade dialogue between the two countries.
