Toby’s Estate opens first Indonesian location

Toby’s Estate, an Australian-based coffee shop and roastery chain owned by the Suntory Group company, Cerebos, has opened its first Indonesian location in Jakarta this week.

Founded in Sydney, Australia in 2001, the company has since expanded to locations in New York, Philippines, Singapore and Kuwait.  The chain roasts its own beans, selling them retail in packages as well as brewing them in the coffee shop.

In its new, Indonesian location, the coffee shop uses beans from Indonesia as well as Yemen, Costa Rica and Brazil.  “Based on our experience, Indonesian coffee is well-liked due to its special taste and richness in variety,” founder Toby Smith said to the local newspaper, The Jakarta Post.

Indonesia is the fourth largest coffee producer in the world and has a long-standing coffee culture. Smith hopes that this new location will allow him to promote Toby’s estate in this established market.
