CoffeeB launches sustainable alternative to coffee capsules

The Swiss coffee brand has launched what it coins the ‘next generation’ of single-serve coffee, an innovative compressed Coffee Ball which uses a seaweed-based casing rather than an aluminium or plastic capsule

Switzerland’s CoffeeB has launched a new product which it promotes as the world’s most environmentally friendly coffee ‘capsule’.

Launched earlier this year by Swiss retail company Migros, CoffeeB is marketed as a ‘capsule-less’ coffee capsule system. Instead of being encased by a traditional aluminium or plastic capsule, the Coffee Balls are surrounded by a seaweed-based layer.

The plant-based protective cover, which remains on the ball of used coffee after brewing, is fully compostable.

“274 tonnes of coffee capsule waste is produced globally every single day. By taking the plastic and aluminium casing out of the equation, our innovative, fully plant-based Coffee Ball helps eliminate one of the biggest concerns with capsule coffee – waste,” said Caroline Siefarth, who led the research and development of the CoffeeB system.

CoffeeB has also launched its Globe coffee machine, a single-serve brewing system designed specifically for the Coffee Balls.

The products are being launched in Switzerland ahead of further European markets in 2023.
